The kind of website you always wish existed and then you find out that it does!
You can learn almost every conceivable language. Practice vocabulary with 'flashcards', including audio recordings of the correct pronounciation. One feature I particularly love is 'reading foreign websites'. Upload any website in a foreign language (a matter of seconds) and you can get the translation of words just by pointing at then with your mouse.

Where is the internet when you need it?

Things I have disappointingly not managed to solve via a search on the internet:

- A forum discussing Marisha Pessl's wonderful new book 'Special Topics in Calamity Physics' (which I unfortunately read in the Dutch translation). Yes I know, 'in life there are no shortcuts' but I could use some borrowed brains here...
- Some of the answers to the Christmas puzzle 'Econogram' from Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad that I uncharacteristically got obsessed with. The same as above applies. I need to send it off before I leave the country on 1 January...
- The whereabouts of half a dozen lost loves and friends.

Things I was pleasantly surprised to find:

- Forums providing 'languages classes' by enthusiasts. I love this.
- Many documents that I was given as a researcher on the condition that I would treat them as confidential.
- The answers to the question 'is this correct English?' (if the BBC website gives a lot of hits for the word or expression, I take it the answer is 'yes')
- The whereabouts of the other half dozen.

Het openen van blogs

Ik heb zo onderhand wel wat meer ervaring met het openen van blogs. Het gebeurt meestal als ik net goed geinstalleerd ben om eens flink aan mijn proefschrift te schrijven, maar dat dan toch niet doe. Of als ik het gevoel heb dat ik duizend-en-een gedachten heb die ik nergens echt kwijt kan, maar misschien wel in iets laagdrempeligs als een blog. Vorige - en inmiddels verwijderde - blogs waren anoniem. Ik gaf ook aan niemand het adres omdat ik wilde dat ze als een soort online archief zouden functioneren, waar hooguit iemand op zou stuiten door een op bepaald onderwerp te zoeken. De laatste blog had zelfs een thema: "life as a beginning academic (why do we write these PhDs anyway?), about how internet changes our lives, and about sharing ‘am I crazy or…?’-type questions". Het werkte niet. Deze nieuwe blog is op naam, gaat vooralsnog over van alles en nog wat en is tweetalig (net als mijn leven). We zullen zien waar het heen gaat. Of eigenlijk: ik zal wel merken wat ik er van maak want ik denk dat ik voorlopig nog maar even niemand het adres geef...
